Korean Grammar Lesson 7.-고 싶다, '-겠-', -(으)ㄹ게요

A : 수희씨, 뭐 먹고 싶어요?
B : 저는 한국에 오면 비빔밥이 먹고 싶었어요.
A : 그럼 비빔밥 두 개를 시킬게요.
B : 네 좋아요. 음료수는 안드시겠어요?
A : 네, 괜찮아요.

비빔밥    bibimbap        음료수      beverage

1. -고 싶다
This pattern is used to express the subject's desire or wish to do something. It is
attached to the action verb stem. In statements 'I' is the subject of the sentence, and
in questions 'you' is the subject of the sentence.

Example)
여행하고 싶다
: I want to travel.
그 시험에 붙고 싶다
: I want to pass the exam.
유학가고 싶어요?
: Do you want to study abroad?

2. -겠-
'-겠-' is used to construct the future tense. It expresses the speaker's determination or intention
in statements, and inquires about the listener's determination or intention in questions.

Example)
무엇을 좀 마시겠습니까?
: Would you llike something to drink?
저는 커피를 마시겠습니다.
: I will drink a cup of coffee.

3. -(으)ㄹ게요
'-(으)ㄹ게요' usually expresses the speaker's promise to the listener in spoken language.
Sometimes it also expresses the speaker's intention or determination. Only statements with
the first person subject can take this ending. '-을게요' is attached to the verb stem ending
in a consonant, and '-ㄹ게요' to the verb stem ending in a vowel.

Example)
회사가서 연락할게요.
: I will call you in company
제가 이 일을 마칠게요.
: I will finish this work.
