Korean Grammar Lesson 16. -아/어/여야 하다, -(으)려고 하다

A : 오늘 태권도 학원을 가려고 해요.
B : 정말이요? 건강에 좋을 것 같네요. 저는 어릴 때 배웠었어요.
A : 그래요? 저는 어릴 때 배우고 싶었는데, 때를 놓쳤네요.
B : 정신 건강에도 좋을 것 같아요.
A : 아, 저 가봐야 할 것 같네요. 나중에 뵈요.

1. -아/어/여야 하다
We use this pattern to express obligation or necessity(with a similar meaning to must, have to, should,
ought to in English) This means the same with '-아/어/여야 되다' but in spoken language '되다' is more
often used. When the final vowel of the verb stem is 'ㅏ' or 'ㅗ', it takes '-아야 하다'.
When the final vowel of the verb stem is other than 'ㅏ' or 'ㅗ', it takes '-어야 하다.' When combined with
the verbs ending with '하다', it makes either '하여야 하다' or '해야 하다'. In spoken Korean, '해야 하다' is
more often used.

Example)
내일까지, 보고서를 제출해야 합니다.
: I have to submit my report by tomorrow.
전 지금 가야할 것 같아요.
: I have to go now.

2. -(으)려고 하다
'-(으)려고 하다' indicates the speaker's intention or will, '-으려고 하다' is attached to the verb stem ending
in a consonant, and '-려고 하다' is attached to the verb stem ending in a vowel.

Example)
오늘 도서관에 가려고 합니다.
: I'm going to go to the library.
친구에게 돈을 빌릴려고 하는데요.
: I'd like to borrow some money from my friend.
